After considering Richard Page of Mr. Mister for the gig he turned it down , Chicago stumbled across Scheff almost accidentally. It was for his voice that he was being considered.
But when Howard Kaufman , Chicago 's manager, found out Scheff played the bass, the deal was sealed. Being asked to join Chicago was "the last thing that I would have imagined". Chicago was about to go into the studio with producer David Foster to record "Chicago 18", their third set with Foster and the follow-up to their monstrous 17th album.
To their credit, the rest of the band - especially Bill Champlin - made Scheff feel at home. The sessions went well for the new "New Guy", though the Chicago vets had tired of Foster's very hands-on approach. According to Scheff, this was when he felt that he finally belonged. The album was released in September of , and the band took to the road for a fall tour. Replacing a focal point like Cetera is never easy, however, and Scheff has had his share of detractors.
Realistically, Scheff can't match Cetera's vocals on Cetera's songs, and asking him to do so and it's obvious he has been asked isn't fair. Scheff is far better singing his own material. As I type this out remembering it… I'm going to pause for a second and take that in again…. You're gonna get a good 5 years out of this! You can buy any car you want now! You know what? Don't take anything for granted… don't EVER get too comfortable which brings on complacency.
And there it is… I know, this was a full blown novel… but, there's no other way I can tell it… that's my story of how I got into the band Chicago. Jason ….. You have a beautiful voice better than Peter C….. All of Chicago love songs made my husband and I more in love for the rest of our life. Thank you so much…. San Diego Love you all.
I really, really, really appreciate your song Now. And once again as I told you on Facebook, Peter who!! My name is Blake Whitten, a statistics professor at the University of Iowa. Regardless, thank you for being such a kind and loving soul. I will always consider myself to be your friend and fan! I wish you happiness! Thanks for sharing your story of this amazing opportunity. Your debut was great. A fresh new face for Chicago, you were sweeter than sunshine.
I wish you good luck and good health. Your story is great! I truly enjoyed the many concerts and recordings I heard you with that great band. You will be missed. I like it! If we had met at the beginning of Steely Dan you would have been the lead singer and you would have lasted past the second album.
I went to a Chicago- Doobie Brothers concert last night.. All but my first show you were in the band. I took last year off but I will be seeing Chicago in a week.
You were and still are an amazing human being! You were so kind to me and my son. Chicago will never be the same again with out you and Walt! Hopefully we will know the real reason why you left the band some day. My son and I wish you all the best and I hope our paths cross again some day. One of your biggest supporters, Ron. Great song I got Heart Of Holes based on the events of Super story, Jason! It gives all of us the message that we should continue to endure until we reach our goals!
Love your music — love the long tenure that you had with Chicago! Keep going, OK? Me encantan tus canciones como solista, siempre te he seguido, dejame decirte que me gusta Peter Cetera, pero.. Great story, Jason! Thanks so much again for sharing so much of your personal experiences with us. Quite an inspiration and a testimony of what one can accomplish when you persevere, when you face a challenge despite the fears, the insecurities, etc. I myself look back at many events in my life and remind myself today, when the self-sabotage tries to blow my plans away, of what I managed to do despite the doubts then.
I did what I wanted and knew I had and loved to do and tell myself now: you do not have to fear. If it is meant to be, with your efforts, you will make it…I did it many times before. It is not different now… God bless you! I was a senior when you were in 10th. Followed you from afar. Saw a couple of Peoplemover shows at the Bahia back in the day.
Knew you were onto something. Congrats on a great career so far. Your fellow Pointer Mike Bishop. I love this story! A great lesson there that I have seen in my life since the first time I read this a few years ago! Your blogs have had a huge impact on me!!
I am loving your new music and watching you make the next batch of dreams come true! Thank you for sharing! You were an asset to them. Now, I understand why you left! You would be a Great fit for any band!
Thank you for sharing your story. I believe greatly in the 6 degrees if separation and to me this is a great example. Now that I have retired from work I can be co-manager and hopefully move the songs forward rather than gathering dust. You gave me a lot of information on that.
The other thing is your drug history. Do not be ashamed of this. I was one night in Sydney and on my balcony high as a kite and contemplating jumping. Instead I called a Drug Hotline and spoke to a very learned man. It was almost like he was in the room with me and I could feel him touch my hand. That made me think of being an individual with things to offer. I got my Social Work Degree and spent 23 years working in Mental Health and disability for kids with brain injury. It was a difficult job but satisfying when magic happens.
Talk soon Jason Scheff. FBPO: He is! Somebody sent me his biography several years ago, which I read with great interest. I devoured it. What else is coming up for you? Jason: Just working with all these people.
Fortunately, Chicago is continuing as strong as ever. For me, I can now stay close to my family. America, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell are friends of mine.
And Pablo Cruise. A lot of other artists on that. I want him to be with me as much as he can be, but I think my year-old is gonna snatch him up. My year-old just got signed to a major label. Here I Am. Video interview with son of legendary bassist Jerry Scheff, talking about filling Peter Cetera's shoes….
