Surfing is also allowed in some parts of the beach. La Jolla Shores is a perfect family beach that attracts large crowds of both tourists and locals. Take a short stroll through the lovely adjacent Kellogg Park which is perfect for picnics or visit the nearby Steven Birch Aquarium.

Fishing is not permitted here at La Jolla Shores, but some areas are designated for surfing. There is also a large grass area close to the beach where people come from all over town for regular yoga lessons. Bordered by cliffs that are 75 feet high, this amazing beach is split into two separate areas.

Coronado Beach is not technically a San Diego beach since Coronado is an independent city, but it is definitely worth a mention. Coronado is an upscale beach town on a peninsula right by San Diego.

You can take the ferry from downtown to Coronado to get there. There is plenty of space to spread out on this mile long beach, the amenities are great and there are a few family-friendly restaurants nearby.

Pacific Beach is where the college kids hang out. The beach in Pacific beach also has more of a party atmosphere and it definitely becomes a party city during spring break.
