Members of the Association are the select few who have been honored with the Horatio Alger Award. They are dedicated civic, corporate and cultural leaders who demonstrate individual initiative and a commitment to excellence as exemplified by remarkable achievements accomplished through honesty, hard work, self-reliance and perseverance over adversity.
Horatio Alger Members are part of a select group of individuals who have experienced a wide spectrum of what life can offer. Similar to characters in stories by Horatio Alger, Jr. Portuguese Foster on Deception Island is named after him. He drowned in in the Chagres River in Panama.
After Foster"s loss, the ship"s command fell to Austin. Following the failure of James Clark Ross"s attempt to locate the lost Franklin Expedition, Austin led an expedition that also attempted to find Sir John Franklin and his crew. George F. Although the expedition located only traces of Franklin"s presence, Austin is credited with organising successful sledging expeditions along the coasts of several Canadian Arctic islands, including Bathurst, Byam Martin, Melville, and Prince of Wales Island.
Between October and March , members of the Resolute crew under Captain Horatio Austin published at least five numbers of a handwritten newspaper, "The Illustrated Arctic News," during the wintering of the Resolute in what they identified as "Barrow Strait.
Until recently, the principal primary source for the voyage was The Illustrated Arctic News [iv] , a shipboard newspaper compiled in handwritten form by George McDougall Resolute and Sherard Osborn Intrepid whilst the ships wintered in the pack ice of Barrow Strait in The newspaper was published on the return of the Austin search party to England in , and both McDougall and Osborn subsequently printed separate detailed accounts of their experiences.
